Made a mistake? Here’s what to do next
We've all had those moments.
The moment where you wish you could rewind time.
You replay what happened.
You think about what you should have done differently.
You feel embarrassed, frustrated or even angry at yourself.
Maybe you made a mistake.
Maybe something didn't go the way you planned.
Maybe you didn't perform the way you expected.
In these moments, it can feel like the mistake is bigger than it actually is.
But one moment does not define you.
What matters most is what you do next.
At Think Set Go, we believe setbacks are not the end of the story. They are opportunities to learn, reset and move forward.
Here are some strategies to help when things don't go to plan.
THINK: Give Yourself Time and Perspective
When emotions are high, it can be difficult to think clearly.
Your brain wants to replay the situation over and over:
"Why did I do that?"
"What was I thinking?"
"Everyone must be thinking negatively about me."
The first step is to give yourself space.
Move away from that moment.
Sometimes that means:
Getting a good night's sleep before trying to solve the problem.
Taking a few days away from the situation.
Doing something fun that helps you reconnect with yourself.
Focusing on another responsibility or something else that matters.
Watching a carefree movie.
Spending time on a hobby.
Asking other people how their life is going and shifting your focus outside yourself.
Using calming strategies such as colour breathing.
Let the emotion out.
Cry if you need to.
Give someone a hug.
Then slowly……. come back.
Talk to people who understand, who can listen, support you or help you see things from a different perspective.
Time doesn't erase what happened, but it gives you a clearer mind to respond.
THINK: Remember the Bigger Picture
When we make a mistake, our brain often focuses only on what went wrong.
Challenge that thinking.
Ask yourself:
How much worse could it have been?
What actually went well?
What can I be grateful for?
What would I tell a friend if they were in this situation?
Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of the things we have done well.
One mistake doesn't erase your achievements.
One disappointing moment doesn't mean you aren't capable.
Your confidence comes from remembering the full picture, not just the moment that went wrong.
SET: Learn From It and Protect Your Energy
Once the emotion has settled, it's time to learn.
Every experience gives us information.
Instead of asking:
"Why did I mess up?"
Try asking:
"What can I do differently next time?"
Set yourself up to be better prepared if you find yourself in a similar situation again.
Maybe you need to:
Practise a skill.
Ask for feedback.
Prepare differently.
Change your approach.
Put strategies in place to support yourself.
Join forces with someone else.
Learning from a mistake protects your energy because you turn frustration into growth.
GO: Take Action and Move Forward
At some point, you have to stop replaying the moment and start moving forward.
Take action.
Redesign.
Try again.
Use the lesson you have learnt.
Don't carry the mistake with you forever. Take what you need from the experience, then leave the rest behind.
Because the goal isn't to never make mistakes.
The goal is to become someone who knows how to respond when they do.
Remember...
When you are embarrassed or angry at yourself, your mind can make the moment feel much bigger than it is.
But the world is still spinning.
People are still going about their day.
Tomorrow will still come.
Often, it is just your mind and that moment in time that has thrown you off.
Notice that you are okay.
Breathe.
Learn.
Reset.
Move forward.
Because every mistake is not a sign that you have failed.
Sometimes it is simply the experience that helps you become better than you were before.
